The Boyle-River flows through Lough Gara, Lough Key, Oakport Lough and Drumharlow Lough before entering the Shannon above Carrick-on-Shannon. Cuppanan-Bridge will fish well in early season with bags of Roach to 50lb, and big Bream and Hybrids. With a dry summer the water becomes too shallow and weedy and it is difficult to fish, other places to fish include Drum-Bridge, Knockvicar and Cootehall. All have the potential to be productive on the day.
This is a weedy lake located 3 miles southeast of Boyle on the Knockvicar road which holds good stocks of tench to 5lbs with a small stock of other coarse fish including bream, roach and perch. At the moment the Shannon Fisheries Board have removed the long platform along the public road for safety reasons and the only remaining concrete stand is accessed to the left of the car park through the reeds.
Lough Arrow is reputed to be one of the best wild brown trout lakes in Europe with over 3,000 acres of spring fed unpolluted waters. Noted salmon rivers are just a few miles north and some of the best coarse fishing waters in Ireland are within a few minutes drive. Coarse fishing can be enjoyed all year round with reputable waters nearby. These include the rivers Shannon, Boyle and Moy and lakes such as Lough Key, Lough Allen, Lough Conn, Lough Mask and Lough Corrib to name just a few.
No license is required for Lough Arrow. Lough Arrow trout fishing season extends from 1st April to 30th September.
Located approx. 7 miles from Boyle, Lough Derreen is nestled along the Knockvicar road. Fishing is into 10 to 20 feet of water along any of the 50 single stands on the lake. The lake holds good stocks of bream, rudd, roach, tench and hybrids. The lake is accessed through Coillte land. Anglers should note that you are not allowed to drive cars to the lake without express permission from Coillte.
Lough Gara Lower is one of three lakes, a large body of water which holds good stocks of all coarse fish. This is a noted pike fishery where fish to 20lbs+ are regularly recorded. There are two access points to the lake, one on the northern shore and the other is on the southern shore. Both areas have car parking facilities, a slipway to launch a boat and fishing stands. Open shore fishing is possible. There is good access for pike fishing from these points.
This is a large lake but access can be difficult and the best results can be gained by using a boat to access one of the islands or the shore. It has a very good stock of bream, roach and hybrids. The best areas for coarse fishing are the Doon shore, Erris bay and the Knockvicar side of the lake.
Oakport lough is located 6 miles northeast of Boyle beside the village of Cootehall. Fishing is into 10 feet of water and the lake has bream to 5 lbs, roach, rudd and hybrids. The Shannon Fisheries Board has erected a number of access footbridges and stiles along this section and fishing is from the shore. There is also two concrete stands along the softer part of the shore.
