Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan has one foot in Brussels with his re-election to the European Parliament looking inevitable after the first count. The Independent candidate took 85,034 first preference votes only one spot behind poll topper Mairead McGuinness on 134,630.

The future of his outgoing colleague Matt Carthy is much less certain with the Sinn Féin party member predicting “a fight for the final two seats”.
