Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan On Course for Re-Election

Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan has one foot in Brussels with his re-election to the European Parliament looking inevitable after the first count. The Independent candidate took 85,034 first preference votes only one spot behind poll topper Mairead McGuinness on 134,630.

Fine Gael’s McGuinness smashed the 118,986 quota and was elected on the first count with Mr Flanagan expected to be the next Midlands North West candidate returned to the European Parliament. The future of his outgoing colleague Matt Carthy is much less certain with the Sinn Féin party member predicting “a fight for the final two seats”.
