A Shannonside senator has revealed that new rules are to be introduced to the grant aid available for septic tank owners.

At present anyone who applies for financial support after their tank is deemed in need of remedial works faces being means tested to qualify.

But Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins says the Government is to introduce new rules for treatment systems which are found to contravene regulations following an inspection.

Under the revised scheme the level of grant aid will be raised to €5,000 or 85pc of the total eligible cost whichever is less with no means testing.

The Roscommon senator says the news will benefit many householders and that the full details will be released in the coming weeks.
